Rebranding The City of Pensacola
The Challenge
How do you craft a new brand identity for a city with 465 years of history and more than 50,000 residents, all with their own story of what Pensacola means to them?
Pensacola is deeply rooted in tradition, yet actively evolving. Any new identity had to respect that history while giving the city a modern system built for growth, visibility, and real-world use across dozens of departments.
The Approach
Listen deeply. Build collaboratively. Design with intention.
Rather than starting with aesthetics, we started with people. Our approach centered on collaboration, community input, and strategic restraint. The goal was not to chase trends, but to create a visual system that could belong to everyone and endure for decades.
A New Era for a City on the Rise
When your hometown becomes your client, everything gets personal. The City of Pensacola approached us with an ambitious goal: build a new logo and brand system that honors its legacy, reflects its diverse community, and supports a city experiencing meaningful growth. This was not about creating a single mark. It was about developing a complete visual language that could flex across departments, initiatives, digital platforms, and physical environments. From water towers to business cards, the identity needed to work everywhere and mean something to everyone.
Discovery
Before any design work began, we immersed ourselves in research and collaboration.
Logo and Landscape Audit
We conducted a deep audit of more than 100 municipal brands, ranging from major metropolitan cities to neighboring Gulf Coast communities. This helped us identify opportunities for differentiation, longevity, and clarity.
Community and Stakeholder Input
Through word mapping, visual exercises, and a collaborative creative workshop with longtime locals and newer residents, we gathered insights into how people experience Pensacola today.
We heard about:
- The thunder of the Blue Angels overhead
- The calm of oak-lined streets
- The pride of a military town
- The pulse of new industries and entrepreneurs
- The balance of small-town charm and city momentum
These insights did not just inspire the design. They shaped the meaning behind every decision.
The conclusion was clear. Pensacola did not need a trendy logo. It needed a flexible, values-driven visual system designed for real-world use.
The Logo
The new logo is a modern emblem of Pensacola’s identity. More than just a visual mark, every shape, curve, and color carries intentional meaning. Each element thoughtfully designed to reflect the city’s story, spirit, and future.
Generational: The five segments reflect Pensacola’s legacy as the City of Five Flags. They also symbolize the big five of local art: opera, symphony, theater, museum, and ballet.
Charming: The shape suggests both a sunrise and a seashell. It nods to Pensacola’s coastal setting and sunny outlook.
Impactful: At the center sits a water splash and exclamation point, symbolizing innovation, energy, and excitement.
Friendly: The upward-facing form mimics the “Western Gate” concept, welcoming all with an open, celebratory gesture.
Balanced: The symmetry mirrors the Blue Angels’ Delta Breakout maneuver, representing structure, forward motion, and grace.
What results is a mark that feels like home to everyone who sees it. It is unified, flexible, and unmistakably Pensacola.
The Colors
The brand’s color palette reflects Pensacola’s natural beauty and cultural energy. Each color was chosen to tie back to the values of the brand. These colors reflect friendliness, impact, balance, growth, and heritage.
- Deep blues and navies from the Gulf and the sky
- Greens from pine forests and towering oaks
- Golden hues pulled from sunshine, historic buildings, and Spanish influences
Warm sands and corals drawn from the beaches and clay
The System
The identity was designed as a living system, not a static brand.
We developed a comprehensive visual framework that allows the city to communicate clearly across departments while maintaining cohesion.
System Components
- Icon library representing culture, industry, nature, and neighborhoods
- Modern, accessible typography pairings
- Patterns and textures inspired by local forms and movement
- Badge designs honoring landmarks, legends, and community moments
- Clear guidelines for vehicles, signage, uniforms, digital content, and print
The system was built to grow with the city and to be used daily, not just admired.
Beyond the Brand
This project extended far beyond visual identity work. Our team supported the City of Pensacola through a complete brand rollout and launch strategy.
Social Media Rollout
We partnered with the city to plan and execute a comprehensive social launch. Our team handled:
- Social design systems
- Caption writing and messaging alignment
- Content planning for the rollout window
- Recording and editing the official brand launch video featuring the Mayor
The result was a cohesive, engaging rollout that introduced the new brand clearly and confidently to the public.
Landing Page Design
To support transparency and community understanding, we collaborated with the city to design and develop a dedicated rebrand landing page.
This page served as a centralized information hub where citizens could:
- Learn the story behind the new brand
- Understand the meaning of the logo and system
- Access resources and context around the rollout
Our work included content development, information architecture, and front-end design to ensure clarity and accessibility.
Messaging Support
While this project did not include a full North Star messaging system, we provided strategic messaging support tailored to the city’s needs.
This included a suite of adaptable headlines designed for:
- Advertising and promotions
- Print collateral
- City initiatives and campaigns
- Event materials and signage
These headlines helped ensure the brand voice was consistent wherever it appeared.
The Impact
Cities are complex. No single logo can represent every story, every memory, or every person. But this one comes as close as you can get.
It was designed with input from the community. Built with intention. Grounded in the past and built for what’s next. Most importantly, it belongs to the people of Pensacola.
